Asset freezing is a legal process which prevents a defendant whether innocent or guilty (usually an apparent fraudster) to an action from dissipating their assets from beyond the jurisdiction of a court so as to frustrate a potential judgment.

In a divorce, a court can freeze bank accounts and other marital assets. This is generally done by use of a court order that stops you or your soon to be ex-spouse from accessing any money or forbidding the sale or destruction of other marital assets. This motion was used to freeze certain assets (401(K), stock options and bonus) of a party that appeared to be dissipating the marital estate.
